Questions to Ask a German Shepherd Breeder Before Reserving
A useful breeder conversation covers more than a puppy’s photo or price. Use these questions to understand the puppy, the available records, and the placement terms before making a commitment.
Which puppy are we discussing?
Confirm the puppy’s birth date, sex, parents, current availability, and expected go-home date. Request recent individual photos and ask what the breeder has observed about that puppy.
What parent documentation can I review?
Ask for pedigrees, registration details, and available health-test reports for each parent. Check that the names and identifying details match. Ask exactly which tests were performed and request the records behind any claim.
What is included at go-home?
Confirm registration paperwork, vaccination and deworming records, microchip information, and the veterinary check. Ask what documents you will receive and review the puppy’s individual records.
What are the reservation terms?
Request the written agreement. Understand the full price, whether the deposit is refundable, how it is applied, when the balance is due, and any separate transport cost. Discuss any guarantee directly and read its exact terms.
How are pickup and support handled?
Confirm pickup or transport arrangements, the puppy’s readiness, and how to contact the breeder afterward. Share your household and experience so the breeder can discuss a suitable match.
